Hey, gang.

I'm obsessed with Tolkien's world since childhood, so this forums is like my dream come true!
I was aware that this data exists, but since I couldn't get the outerra demo working and I thought it's only available in some proprietary Global Mapper format, I kinda forgot about it until I've found that there are shapefiles on github.

I'm afraid i'm kind of “late to the party”, but I hope that there are still some people who would be willing to answer some of my questions.

If you're interested, check out a blog-post about a Middle-earth related project I did few years ago: https://hellricer.github.io/2015/04/30/genes-in-middle-earth.html

Great to hear that! And yeah, I'm familiar with git.

I mainly work on adding and clearing up the names of features instead of creating them.
I noticed that there are lot of names of forests, rivers, etc., in Combined Placenames layer that are not in their respective layers.
There's also lot of non-canon stuff there from places like lotro, merp and even some tabletop games. I'm not necessarily against keeping them in, but I'd vouch for making the distinction clear between them and canon.

And last but not least, I think it would be nice to introduce some kind of naming hierarchy system which could be used for showing only the relevant stuff based on the zoom level.

Hey Hellricer, I'm glad that you are working with the data! We have some additional shapefiles that I haven't uploaded. But the shapefiles on GitHub are the most up-to-date and detailed versions of themselves. I also use qgis. I'm glad that Leaflet is working for you. The custom coordinate system that we use is weird and often doesn't play nicely with webmaps.

Have you worked with Git before? Here is a tutorial: https://product.hubspot.com/blog/git-and-github-tutorial-for-beginners If you have a branch of the data and submit a pull request, I will approve it so that we can incorporate your changes.

Hello, I just found the me-gis repository on github and I'm completely astonished by it!

I'm trying to create OSM-style map from this, but I found some mistakes & innacuracies, which leads me to the question...

As I understand it, the files presented in the github repo are basically just exports from probably much bigger dataset, right? So what would be the best to contribute back? I'm not sure I can run Global Mapper on linux...

I'm editing the files in qgis and exports to OpenLayers or Leaflet works really great!

Can you post the details on how you did this, Stephen? I think that's a lot of fun so I'd like to do it too.

Hi Jvan, is the Webmap still unfinished or am I missing something?

Hi monks and anyone involved in this project. I'm a graduate student and I was hoping to use the data from this project in a graduate level thesis of some kind. Can someone tell me what data is available, preferably in GIS formats? Feel free to PM me too. I'm a civil engineer and was hoping to do a hydrologic analysis of the world DEM and see how sediment transport and possible urbanization will change the terrain.

Hello there,

First of all, based on the videos I've seen this is a fantastic effort and I am so glad it exists.

I tried installing this now and i experience an error when I try to load medem. I end up with a black planet with the stars behind.

This is from the log

Code: [Select]

Any help fixing this would be immensely appreciated.
I am on Windows 10 64 bit if it helps.

Thanks

Hey guys,

I am migrating my Webmap to a different host. The new address is:

http://jeremy.vangelders.us/openlayers2.html

I also intend the github repository to be a place where anyone can improve the GIS data.
